Neoclassical
Neoclassicism was a resurgence in the classical culture of Rome and Greece in the 18th and 19th century. It was opposed to the whismical style of Rococo art. This movement was fueled by the french revolution and a desire to be more like ancient Rome. During this time, massive archaeological breakthroughs were made, such as the discovery of Pompeii, which showed more what roman art and architecture was like.
The Oath of Horatii - Jaques-Louis David
This painting depicts a dramatic event of Roman History, when three brothers swear an oath to the Roman Empire before going to battle, with their father holding the swords. This painting was meant to higheten french patriotism and courage. The harsh lines and muted colors of this painting are typical of the period, and really help convey how dramatic this event was.
